What is the purpose of a pre-brief for a training session and what should it include?

A pre-brief sets the stage for a training session by clarifying what will be covered, how participants will participate, and what success looks like. It should outline objectives, safety considerations, roles, and expected outcomes, and it ensures participants understand expectations and any constraints they’ll operate under. This alignment helps everyone focus on the right goals, stay safe, and know how they’ll be evaluated or judged during the session. It also reduces confusion about what is allowed, what isn’t, and how decisions will be made, which in turn supports smoother, more effective learning. Other tasks like evaluating vendor contracts aren’t part of preparing a training session, and finalizing the end-of-session quiz belongs after the training, not before. Seating arrangements are a minor logistical detail and not a core part of getting participants ready to learn.
